Featured Golf: Temenos Golf Club

Featured Golf – Temenos Golf Club, West End, Anguilla

by Reagan Johnson

With its pristine beaches, exclusive boutique hotels and world-class cuisine, tiny Anguilla has long been a magnet for celebs and well-heeled travelers. But with the addition of the sprawling Temenos Golf Club, the island's first and only golf course, in November of 2006, Anguilla began to draw a new breed of active vacationers. Even the regular set of sleepy beachgoers has been making a break from their lounge chairs and cabanas for a taste of the spectacular panoramic views promised by the impressive course.

Situated on the grounds of the exclusive Temenos Anguilla Resort and Residences along the West End, the Greg Norman-designed, 7,100-yard course tempts players with 18 challenging holes carved into a ribbon of natural dunes. The winding track features unexpected elevation changes, including the memorable opening hole with its four-story drop from tee to green – "the Caribbean's answer to the 18th at Pebble Beach," according to the Robb Report. But even factoring the course's shifting elevations, the island itself is relatively flat, allowing strong trade winds to influence play throughout. Players enjoy sweeping views of lagoons, turquoise ocean waters and a silhouetted St. Martin from most holes on the par-72 course, and all but five holes include water features. The track also boasts the landmark Merrywing Salt Pond – a carefully renewed, natural waterway now stocked with bonefish and other marine life – that weaves its way through several holes to create dramatic views and a threatening water hazard.

At the end of a round, golfers can unwind in the stately, Greek-inspired clubhouse perched hilltop on the 18th. The elegant, 28,000-square-foot retreat features an upscale pro shop, and is also home to Zurra, a popular Mediterranean restaurant run by well-known island chefs Bob and Melinda Blanchard.

From $150 per round, July 1 to October 15; $300 from January 15 to April 15; Rentals from $75; One-hour golf lessons from $120. Members and resort guests have priority over tee times so book your round in advance to ensure the best rate and availability.
