St. Eustatius – known as Statia – is an eccentric little island that attracts history buffs and hikers and divers. There are just a few dozen hotel rooms here, and the best are found at the recently reopened Old Gin House, a one-time cotton refinery. A St. Maarten family purchased and renovated the 14 poolside rooms in 1999, incorporating antigue furnishings such as king-sized sleigh beds and modern amenities like cable TV and air conditioning. They also added four new well-appointed suites, two of which are on the water. There's a pool, a library above the bar and a gourmet restraurant.
