American Eagle Airlines has added flights to and from the Caribbean island of Vieques, located off the coast of Puerto Rico. Flights will begin Dec. 16 and passengers can start booking as of Oct. 16.
Martineau Bay Resort & Spa in Vieques has helped make this possible. Reig Capital Puerto Rico Inc., developers of Martineau Bay Resort & Spa, have negotiated with the Ports Authority to invest approximately $800,000 in new airport facilities. By next year, the resort will have constructed an additional waiting area at the Vieques airport with a Martineau Bay Resort booth and a car rental booth. Construction of this new building is set to begin the week of Oct. 17. Because American Eagle will be operating Super ATR aircraft with a capacity of 64 passengers, the new airport building will also comply with TSA requirements for thorough security screening. In the past, flights in and out of Vieques have been limited to carriers such as Cape Air and Vieques Air Link, which do not share the same security requirements.
"We at Martineau Bay are thrilled to be a part of bringing this new level of air travel to the citizens of Vieques and to the outside world to facilitate greater ease in visiting this Caribbean jewel," said Rabin Ortiz, general manager. "The launch of American Eagle flights couldn't be more perfectly timed as Martineau Bay Resort & Spa begins its transformation to the first W Resort in the US and Caribbean--W Vieques."
