Happy Hour: Allspice Dram Hot Toddy

Stuck in cold weather, dreaming of the Caribbean? This hot toddy, spiked with Jamaican allspice dram, should warm you up.

Allspice dram, also known as pimento dram, is made from the same dried allspice berries that Jamaicans use to flavor their famous jerk recipes. The dram was once hard to find outside the Caribbean, but thanks to a recent revival of vintage cocktails, many brands now available stateside.

MAKES 1 DRINK

INGREDIENTS

2 oz. brandy or cognac
1 tbsp allspice dram
The juice of ½ lemon
1 tsp turbinado or demerara sugar (optional)
Hot water
3 or 4 whole cloves
Lemon wedge, for garnish

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Add the brandy, allspice dram, lemon juice, and sugar (if using) to a heat proof glass.

2. Stick the cloves into the lemon wedge and add it to the glass. Fill with hot water and allow to steep for one minute. Stir before serving.
