International Taste Meets Bahama Flavors

The Pointe restaurant and bar in Andros offers visitors a fancier experience than the neighborhood rum bars.

After working for decades as a banker in New York, London, South America and Nassau, South Andros-born George Farrington found his native island a little lacking when he moved back seven years ago. Unable to find a place to get a good steak, a fine rum or wine and a great cigar, he decided to build it himself.

Fishermen from nearby lodges thirsty from long days spent chasing Andros' famed bonefish come to compare their sunburns and many-pocketed shirts to those of the Emerald Palms Beach Resort guests who've trekked down the road for a night out. They're joined by locals in the mood for something fancier than their neighborhood rum shop.

The Pointe's kitchen reflects Farrington's international tastes, offering steaks, salmon and Cornish hens. But when we're in the Bahamas, we'd rather go with the local side of the menu that includes conch salad, cracked lobster, grilled fish, and their popular Point of No Return cocktail. Entrées run about $20.

Swapping fish stories out on the veranda overlooking Johnson Bay is the best entertainment around. On special occasions, The Pointe brings in a rake 'n scrape (Bahamian folk music played with a saw, drums and a concertina) or Junkanoo band (loud drums, loud horns and loud whistles). When there's a good crowd, they'll feed the sharks that swim in from Deep Creek.

The Pointe
Open Wednesday through Sunday and only for dinner and beyond, though they'll open for lunch if you have a group of at least five and call ahead. Happy hour is from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m., with free hors d'oeuvres like conch fritters and chicken wings and two-for-$5 drinks.
