Tobago's landscape ranges from beaches to rainforest, with a variety of levels of difficulty to its hiking trails. Go for a strenuous hike in the Main Ridge Forest Reserve, discovering over two hundred varieties of birds, or take a more meandering path along the western swamps, mangroves and rivers. Most hikers opt for an experienced guide, who can provide fascinating context to the landscape while keeping you on the path. "Let me tell you," says guide Harris McDonald, "Tobago is green, safe and serene."
Recommended gear: comfortable and lightweight pants and shirt; walking shoes, or for some short hikes, rubber boots. Depending on weather, a waterproof poncho may be helpful. Sun hats, sunscreen, insect repellents and water are also always good ideas.
