The Cove's Caribbean Connection

The Cove's Caribbean Connection

March 16th, 2010
By Dave Herndon

We were delighted to see "The Cove" win the Oscar for best documentary. It's an exciting movie about a guerilla investigation into shockingly inhumane dolphin "harvesting" practices in Japan, and it also touches on that country's manipulation of Caribbean island nations to gain votes to enable commercial whaling. This is one of those thorny issues that lingers on, but as visitors to the region we can vote with our sightseeing dollars. Whale watching is a $54-million business in the region, and Dominica, for one, withdrew its support for whaling and urged its neighbors to do the same. Only makes sense: Who wants to go whale watching in a country that supports their slaughter? Here's a link to an informative opinion piece on the topic, and you can get "The Cove" on Netflix.
