Eat More Lionfish
April 21st, 2010
By Dave Herndon
Here's a link to an interesting report on treehugger.com about lionfish, the extravagantly beautiful killer that's a mortal threat to Caribbean reef fish because it has no regional predators: "Surveys have found that introducing just a single lionfish to a reef leads to a 79 percent reduction in juvenille fish populations within five weeks."
Says Gladys Howard, the proprietor of Pirate's Point on Little Cayman (profiled in our latest issue): "Lionfish eat the fish on our grouper cleaning stations. That's like going to your beauty shop and eating your beautician!" For the record, Bob Friel reported back in our Nov. 2008 issue that eating lionfish might be a useful tactic in fighting back.
