Game On: The Return of the Bimini Big Game Club
Artist, sportsman and fishing guru Guy Harvey can spot a big catch a mile away, so when the Bahamas’ venerable Bimini Big Game Club went on the market recently, he was hooked. The Alice Town fishing lodge opened its cottage doors in 1936, and it flourished for decades as the Out Islands’ fishing mecca before a gradual decline led to its shuttering two years ago. Harvey and a team of eco-enthusiast developers rescued the 51-room property – and the island’s sport-fishing legacy – with a multimillion-dollar renovation, christening it the Caribbean’s first Guy Harvey Outpost Resort & Marina in July. The resort will lure big-game fishermen and boaters with its classic fish-camp vibe and proximity to the bonefish-rich Bimini Flats (not to mention the 75-slip marina, with full-service fuel operations scheduled to begin in early 2011), but Harvey bills the resort as an even broader eco-destination by promoting sustainable tourism and environmental philosophies throughout the property. Guests can take advantage of an on-site research institute offering interactive marine science classes with visiting educators and scientists, or they can check out an array of outfitter services, such as guided fishing expeditions and dives.
