Picturesque Privacy: Exuma Private Isles

July 29th, 2011
By Alyx Kaczuwka

Looking for your own little spot of paradise? A recent Wall Street Journal article lets us know there's a building boom in the Exumas, a 365-island archipelago in the Bahamas:

"Roughly 300 miles off the coast of South Florida is a string of mostly uninhabited small islands amid clear blue water and coral reefs on a limestone plateau. There's virtually no nightlife, no major airports, no celebrity chef restaurants. There are also no neighbors. That remoteness is attracting a rarefied group of wealthy entertainers and name-brand CEOs. In the world of high-end real estate, privacy is an increasingly prized amenity."

Even with 90% of the islands being unhabitable or protected, you might see a few recognizable faces nearby if you do decide to plant a flag in the Exuma Cays, though - WSJ reports some denizens of the area include country singers Tim McGraw and Faith Hill, Johnny Depp, David Copperfield (we covered David Copperfield's Musha Cay home in our last Private Islands piece) and Bernard Arnault, the chairman and CEO of luxury empire Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy. The article also mentions these are some of the more reasonably-priced private islands in the Caribbean, since there are so many in the archipelago - but remember "reasonable" has to be put in context, as the sale prices cited still start around $22 million.

Not to worry, the rest of us can still rent a slice of paradise, proving these private islands aren't just for billionaires: check our our list of top Caribbean resorts on private islands.
