Jamaican cuisine provides numerious opportunities for a chef to experiment, given its wide variety of cultural influences - both indigenous and using techniques brought to the island and adapted to local foods and flavors.

Going far beyond the predictable curry, plantains and jerk spices, one hundred chefs will participate in this year's Taste of Jamaica, and from this group, the Jamaican National Chef Team will be chosen to compete in the Taste of the Caribbean 2012 competition. Taste of Jamaica will be held from October 15-16, 2011 at the Convention Centre, Montego Bay. There are plans to hold the competition annually.

More details from the press release:

Chef Ravi said that patrons coming out to the event get a chance to be blown away by chefs excelling in the kitchen and to sample delectable food from the sponsored booths at a low cost.

For adults it is $400 for a day, $600 for both days; students with ID will pay $300 for one day and $400 for both days. Chef Ravi noted that the event will be held annually and he hopes that it will be bigger and better each year.

If you attend, be sure to also check out Montego Bay's Hip Strip, always a prime dining and nightlife destination.
