Food Watch: Caribbean Food & Wine Festival
I’m just back from the second annual Caribbean Food & Wine Festival, hosted by Grace Bay Resorts in Providenciales, Turks & Caicos. Festivities for the three-day event kicked off at the exquisite Amanyara resort with sunset cocktails, heavy hor d'oeuvres and introductions to the weekend’s key players: Local chefs like Grace Bay Club’s Wolfgang Von Wieser and the Gansevoort’s Matthew Doerner teamed up with international sensations chefs Beau MacMillan and Paul Richard Newman (both Iron Chefs) as well as some of California’s finest winemakers: Heidi Barrett of La Sirena, John Terlato of Terlato Wines and Tuck Beckstoffer of his eponymous label. The next evening’s Gourmet Safari tested, trained and tempted my palette with courses like lionfish pizzetta, fritto misto with local conch, oxtail-and-foie-gras cannelloni, and papaya brûlée. Each winemaker chose a particular variety for each dish — crisp, citrus moscato with the brûlée; full-bodied, velvety Pirate TreasuRed with the cannelloni — that perfectly drew out the flavors of the food. And there was still more to come: a food-and-wine pairing the next morning, followed by a street fair that showcased some of the best local dishes (keyword: conch! And good ol’ Turks Head pairs just fine with that.) All of it set against the backdrop of white sands and turquoise water that makes everything taste just that much better.

OK, we CT+L editors of course love all of the Caribbean islands equally. But wow, we're certainly going heavy on our coverage of the Turks and Caicos this week. After all, this is the No. 1 most popular destination that users search for here on our website. We have more travel deals to the Turks and Caicos (14!) than any other island. We've got a sweet Turks and Caicos Summer Sweepstakes running right now. And we just made new photo galleries of our editors' favorite Turks and Caicos beaches plus our readers' favorite Turks and Caicos beach resorts. Why the bonanza? Because ...
The Sands at Grace Bay wants your company so bad, they're giving you a free 4th night on any new booking, on any room category, for the rest of the year. We couldn't believe it either...
Think you have what it takes to compete in a one-mile, open-water swimming race? When I reported on the first annual Race for the Conch Eco-Seaswim in the Turks and Caicos last month, I thought I could wing it...I mean, how hard could it be? Swimming a mile could only take, what – 5 minutes? I'm an optimist. But standing along Grace Bay Beach and checking out the course buoys for the first time...
I just returned from a quick trip to Turks and Caicos, where I had the chance to check out the new Italian Village wing at the all-inclusive Beaches Resort. Going into it, I knew the Grace Bay location would be tough to beat – but I had no idea how much I would end up liking the resort itself. Here, four surprising reasons to check out the property...
