Grand Costa Maya
The Costa Maya is located on the Caribbean well south of the international tourist destination of Cancun and just a short drive from the state capital of Chetumal. Tucked just above the northern border of Belize, it is known locally as the Xcalak Peninsula.
Orginally discovered over 2000 years ago by the Mayan people, these early fishermen regarded it as a fishing paradise. Today Costa Maya offers high grade beaches for real estate investment, quiet enjoyment and, of course, fishing.
The city of Mahahual is slated to be the epicenter of Mexico's nest big tourism boom -- marinas, golf courses, ect. -- but for now it is still a fairly sleep town of locals and expats, where you can enjoy fresh fish and icy cold beer at rustic seafood restaurants. Divers and fly fishermen come for the empty reefs just offshore, bumping down sandy side roads to stay the the few small hotels and resorts that cater to those who love natural beauty.
