Jamaican law allows public access to all beaches up to the high-water mark. But reaching those in front of all-inclusive hotels can be challenging. In these cases, try entering the beach by water or from a neighboring property. Government-maintained beaches charge an entrance fee, usually $2 to $5 per person.
Getting Around
Taxis are plentiful, and cabs run by the JUTA cooperative charge set rates to popular destinations. Adventurers can rent a car (drive on the left), but you should know that Jamaican drivers are notoriously creative. A smooth, new north-coast highway connects Negril, Montego Bay and Ocho Rios, but a four-wheel-drive is essential for trips to Port Antonio, where extensive road work is still underway, and an off-roader is recommended for the narrow and winding South Coast route.
Undress Code
Conservative islanders frown upon nude sunbathing, which is forbidden on public property. Naturists can do their thing on designated nude beaches at resorts such as Couples Ocho Rios, Hedonism II and III, Grand Lido's two hotels and on Negril's Booby Cay. Topless tanning is common on Negril's strip.
