Bimini

Bimini is known as the big-game fishing capital of the world, and conditions for the sport are excellent throughout the year in flats, around the reefs, and in the streams.

GEOGRAPHY

Situated northwest of Nassau and Paradise Island and only 50 miles east of Miami, Bimini is the nearest of the Bahamian islands to the U.S. mainland - close enough to Florida to be distinctly separate from the other islands of the archipelago. Bimini is also one of the smallest island chains in the Bahamas, divided into two separate islands, with a total area of 9 square miles. The smaller of these, North Bimini, is more developed than South Bimini.

VISITING BIMINI

Throughout Bimini, there's a Florida-resort atmosphere steeped in small-town charm. For the casual sightseer, it has only minor appeal, but if you'd like to follow in the footsteps of such famous fishers as Zane Grey and Howard Hughes, Bimini is your island. It's also an excellent center for yachting and cruising, and it offers some of the best scuba diving in The Bahamas.

WHAT TO DO

Fishing
Dubbed "The Big Game Fishing Capital of the World," Bimini is home to world-class deep sea fishing, bottom fishing and bonefishing in the transparent waters surrounding the tiny island chain. You might catch a tournament during your stay, as Bimini hosts many throughout the year, but you're certain to catch something even bigger with an abundance of marlin, tuna, grouper, snapper and wahoo off these shores.

Road to Atlantis
This remarkable dive site has depths of just 15-20 feet, and the crystal "Bahama Blue" waters make it even easier to observe and explore, even for snorkelers. Along the sea floor are massive, rectangular stones - now blanketed in marine vegetation - that rest end to end as though they were once a man-made street or path. The debate continues over whether the stone formations could possibly be natural, so dive the perplexing "road" yourself and see what you believe.
